Cleaning a Gmail inbox and storage

How to Clean Up Gmail and Free Storage

When Google account storage becomes limited, the fastest improvement usually comes from finding large files and recurring messages rather than deleting email one conversation at a time.

Find large messages

In Gmail, searches such as larger:10M or has:attachment older_than:2y can reveal messages that use significant space. Download anything you must retain before deleting it.

Review recurring email

Search for newsletters, automated reports and notifications that are no longer useful. Unsubscribe from legitimate senders and remove older copies in groups.

Empty deleted folders

Messages in Trash and Spam continue to count toward storage until they are permanently removed. Review them first in case something was classified incorrectly.

Check the complete account

Gmail may share storage with Google Drive and Google Photos. Use the account’s storage manager to understand which service is consuming the most space before making broad changes.

Finish by adjusting future habits: share links instead of repeated attachments, limit unnecessary notifications and schedule an occasional storage review.
