Reducing spam in an email inbox

How to Reduce Spam and Regain Control of Your Inbox

An overflowing inbox is more than an inconvenience: it makes important messages harder to find and can expose you to fraud. A few consistent habits can reduce unwanted email without accidentally hiding legitimate communication.

Protect your address

Avoid publishing your primary email address openly. Use a separate address for newsletters, promotions and low-priority registrations, and review what permission a service requests before subscribing.

Unsubscribe carefully

Use the unsubscribe link when the sender is a legitimate organization you recognize. For suspicious messages, do not click links or reply; mark the message as spam so your provider can filter similar mail.

Use filters and account protections

Create filters for recurring messages you want to keep but do not need in the main inbox. Enable multifactor authentication, use a unique password and review forwarding rules periodically, since unexpected rules can indicate that an account has been compromised.

No filter is perfect. Check the spam folder occasionally and adjust rules when useful messages are classified incorrectly.
