An email strategy is effective when it reaches the right people, helps them accomplish something and contributes to a meaningful business outcome. A high open rate alone cannot prove that.
Review delivery and list health
Monitor bounces, complaints, unsubscribes and authentication. Confirm that growth comes from transparent permission rather than purchased or inactive addresses.
Evaluate engagement in context
Clicks and replies usually provide stronger evidence than opens, which can be affected by privacy features. Compare behavior by audience, content type and lifecycle stage.
Connect activity with outcomes
Define what the program should influence: qualified leads, purchases, onboarding, retention, service or another objective. Use consistent attribution rules and acknowledge their limitations.
Assess customer value
Review whether the frequency and content remain useful. Preference changes, negative feedback and declining engagement can reveal pressure before complaints rise.
Improve through controlled learning
Test one meaningful variable at a time and document the result. Optimize for the long-term relationship, not a temporary increase in one metric.
