Open rate can help diagnose an email program, but privacy features and image blocking make it an imperfect measure. The objective is not simply to increase opens; it is to earn attention from the right audience.
1. Write subject and preview text together
Communicate a specific reason to open without exaggeration. Preview text should add useful context rather than repeat the subject line.
2. Personalize through relevance
A first name is not meaningful personalization by itself. Use consented information to send content that reflects the recipient’s relationship, interests or stage in the journey.
3. Improve timing with evidence
Test frequency and delivery time across comparable audience groups. Avoid universal “best time” rules when your own customer behavior provides stronger evidence.
Maintain list health
Authenticate the sending domain, remove invalid addresses and make unsubscribing straightforward. A smaller engaged list is more valuable than a large audience that did not request the message.
Combine open data with clicks, conversions, complaints and retention to understand whether the program is genuinely useful.
